Stables Pies, recently taken over by former employee Dave Smith, was commissioned to provide a range of products for Keighley Beer Festival.

Dave and wife, Janet, supplied the festival – at Central Hall, Alice Street – with pub favourites such as pork and steak and kidney pies, Cornish-style and cheese and onion pasties.

Stables began as a pork butchers in South Street known as Johnny Stables in 1920, passing to Billy Stables in 1954 and master butcher Michael Ward took over from his father-in-law in 1969 before retiring in June.

Forty years after starting in the business at the age of 20, Dave decided to come out of semi-retirement to keep a traditional recipe going.

The company supplies wholesalers in and around Keighley including market traders Paul Whitaker and Paul Dobson, while the newer recipes such as pork, Stilton and pickle pie appear on pub menus.
