Wet conditions thwarted Dougie Lampkin at the Erzberg Rodeo extreme enduro in Austria.

The Silsden rider finished runner-up 12 months ago but he had to settle for sixth place after heavy rain played havoc with the course and left the start area at the base of the huge quarry deep in water.

Lampkin was among the front-runners as the pack emerged from the watery first turn but, as he dashed to the initial hill, his machine was effectively drowned by the resulting wave.

He managed to kick-start his Gas Gas machine back to life, although by then the leaders were long gone and Lampkin spent the rest of his day fighting through heavy traffic.

That and his misfiring engine, due to the on-going effects of the water that had been sucked into the motor, restricted his progress but he dug deep to finish sixth and one of just 14 riders from the 500 starters in the main race to make it to the chequered flag.

The 37-year-old said: “In the end, sixth was probably the best I could have hoped for, taking everything into consideration.

“It’s annoying as it’s an event I like and normally go well at.”

*East Morton’s Martin Crosswaite kept cool under the searing sune to produce a faultless performance at Skyrakes Farm on Sunday to win the Bradford Motor Club’s Davy Cup Trial on the moors north of Skipton.

Crosswaite mastered the 14-section course to beat Haworth’s Dan Clark and Cowling’s Nathan Wrigglesworth.

Joseph Fox and Aaran Carter won youth class B and C respectively.
