KEIGHLEY & Craven Athletics Club member Katie Atkinson won the junior girls race in the English School Cross Country Championships at Newquay.
Her victory helped Skipton Girls High School win their age-group team title, with club-mate Lucy Fryers also playing a starring role in finishing in fourth place.
It also completed a clean sweep of individual titles for Atkinson and team awards for Skipton Girls at North Yorkshire, North East of England and now national level this year.
Atkinson, who had finished eighth in last year’s final, was at the front of the field on the second lap before she eased effortlessly clear during the run-in to clock a time of 9min 21 sec for the 2,380-metre course.
Atkinson and Fryers – along with Angelina Bairstow, who was also part of the Skipton Girls team – put Keighley & Craven AC on the map earlier this autumn. They were crowned under-13 North of England road relay champions and then claimed silver in the national championships.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Lund – also of Keighley & Craven AC – finished 22nd running for Ermysted’s Grammar School in the inters category. He set off strongly but his top-ten hopes faded.
