Silsden 1 Colne 3
FORMER Cobbydalers keeper Chris Thompson denied his relegation-threatened former club a share of the spoils in Tuesday night’s North West Counties League Premier Division encounter.
Silsden’s new manager James Gill partnered James Nettleton with Matty Kershaw in defence and gave a debut to new loan signing Ryan Cattermole at left back.
Kevin Ryan led the attack against a Colne side that had Barnoldswick Town’s top scorer Joe Gaughan making his debut after his transfer.
Thompson was kept busy in the early stages as Silsden made a bright start. Ryan and Cattermole both tested the keeper before the home side took the lead.
A clever back heel from Chris Wademan se Ryan free on the left. The veteran turned back the clock to curl in a delightful opener.
Colne responded to the goal with a burst of pressure but Silsden maintained their lead until the 56th minute.
Jack Brooks saw his attempted clearance strike a colleague and rebound into the path of Simon Nagle, who made no mistake.
Gaughan went close with a dipping volley before Jason Hart picked up the ball wide on the right and burst through a wide open defence to give the visitors the lead after 67 minutes.
With the Cobbydalers searching for the equaliser, Silsden were undone by a deft back-heel from Gaughan who created a chance for Chris Anderson to make it three.
Wademan forced another save from Thompson and then in the dying seconds hit the post from a tight angle.
On Saturday the Cobbydalers travel to Runcorn Town and visit Harrogate Town in the West Riding County Cup semi-final next Tuesday.
