THREE league cup finals were completed at Broughton Road, where the weather was kind after the downpours of previous weeks.

In the Third Division Final for the Chairman’s Cup, Craven proved far too strong for Bingley B in a rather one-sided game where the winners had several ex-homesters in their team including Stuart Wrigley and Jim Akrigg, who won for single figures and where the only loser was the previously-unbeaten league secretary, Mick Demain.

It was also a little bit easy in the Supplementary Cup Final where Steeton B were no match for Bradshaw B and went down by more than 50 points. They could only manage two winners in Eric Robinson and Janet Green as the winners recorded their second success in this event without too much trouble in this Second Division clash.

The main event for the Division One’s Valley Cup saw the most exciting game of the day as Cross Roads A looked set to easily beat Steeton A.

After the first four winners, the game looked to be all over until Carol Uttley won her game and Liz Bland and David Frobisher got good scores to enable the outsiders to win the match by one point.

Sutton were also searching for success in the Aire-Wharfe Jennings Crackles Trophy when they took on the league champions Black Swan A at Idle BC with a small amount of start. Sadly it proved not enough as team went down by 12 chalks having had only four winners. They were caught out by the fast neutral green.

It was also a disappointing day for Cononley as they just failed to finish second in the Bradford League Division Two race despite having some top players missing.

It was not through lack of trying as they had all winners against Hove Edge A to record a 30-0 victory, but Brighouse B got the necessary points to pip them at the end and go up with Littlemoor A.

The Aire-Wharfe League season has also been completed with first division sides, Oxenhope, Sutton and Broughton Road, making no impression on the league’s top sides.

In the Wednesday League, Addingham return to Division Two after their annual season in the top flight.

Latest positions in the Skipton Floodlit League see Cononley level with Colne Cricket in Division One, while Whinfield A and Colne Legion B lead the other sections with two games only to go.

Sad news again for bowlers with the death of Graham ‘Ben’ Ridding, of Eastburn, who has died following a long illness.

Although he had not played for several seasons, when he did he was one of the great characters of the game.

He was a good bowler on his day and played for several sides including Sutton, Devon, Oakworth, Haworth and Steeton, where it all began but without having the success he deserved.

His ability to turn an ordinary game into almost complete chaos was uncanny and many games ended in uproar when he was in attendance in the friendliest of manners. He will be sadly missed and our condolences go to all his family
