Oxenhope 5

OXENHOPE notched their first victory of the season with an away win over Brighouse in the West Yorkshire League Cup first round, thanks to a hat-trick from man-of-the-match Lee Reilly.

On five minutes, a free-kick from James Bailey found skipper Joe Jalil, his shot cannoned back off the post for Reilly to ram home.

Soon after a clever ball by Dan Moriarty found Reilly, he beat two defenders and then slotted the ball under the keeper.

On 20 minutes Bailey floated the ball to Reilly, who took a touch, before cleverly seeing the keeper off his line to lob the ball into the net for his third.

Oxenhope continued to press, Sean Quinlan saw his strike beaten out and a marauding run upfield by Dan Scott had his strike saved by the keeper.

The home side were reduced to breakaways but Oxenhope keeper Steve Davies dealt comfortably with all Brighouse’s’ attempts on goal.

In the second half Reilly set up Bailey but his shot narrowly missed the target as did a strike from defender Scott Nelson.

On the hour a Moriarty corner was met with a powerful header by Luke Scott for Oxenhope’s fourth and another delightful cross from Moriarty was met with a volley from Bailey to complete the scoring.

Oxenhope now need to transfer this cup form into league points, starting at East End Park, Leeds on Saturday (2.30pm).

Oxenhope: Davies, Scott D (Ward), Nelson, Bentham, Scott L, White (Williamson), Jalil, Moriarty, Reilly, Bailey, Quinlan.

Meanwhile, Oxenhope Reserves put in a much-improved performance against league leaders Whitkirk Reserves going down 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller at the Recreation Ground.

The goalscorers were Chris Day, Danny Driver, Chris Newman and Leon Drake.

This Saturday they entertain Hall Green Reserves (2.30pm).
