KEIGHLEY have made a great start to the new season, beating fellow newly-promoted side Hullensians 24-7 on home soil last Saturday.

One young star in particular caught the eye, though how big a part he plays in Keighley's Counties One Yorkshire season remains to be seen.

Young winger Leon Hobson-Sheriff scored the first of Keighley's three tries at the weekend, one of the latest talents to come out of the club's youth system.

But Keighley head coach Dan McGee explained: "Leon's been with us for a while. He's come through the ranks and he's a Keighley boy, whose dad, Allan, is our third-team manager.

"But he's only in his early twenties and has been at uni at Lincoln, with his final year coming up.

"It's a discussion we need to have with Leon (about his availability) because it's possible that he'll keep on playing, with Lincoln not too far away.

"But it all depends on what's best for him."

McGee added: "Leon's naturally a scrum-half, but we've had (his fellow backs) Alfie Seeley missing with a broken hand and Jack Atkinson is out for an indefinite period with a broken leg.

"We've had to call players into the squad because of that, and Leon is one of those who's stepped up."

On paper, Keighley could not have asked for a much better start after promotion, with their first two games at home against the sides who came up with them.

But McGee didn't take Hullensians lightly, and he won't be underestimating Wetherby this Saturday either.

He said: "It's a familiar start for us, going up against the two of them.

"But it can be a negative if you focus on that (it being two promoted teams) too much or you just expect to win, as they're two strong sides who I think will be competitive in this division.

"There are pros and cons to playing the pair of them, and I'm not sure it will really give us an idea of where we're at in this league, because they've come up with us.

"By Christmas we should have a better idea of where we're at, from all the performances we put in up to that point."

Reflecting on Keighley's opening day success, McGee said: "We were very pleased to start with a win, especially as we'd only had one pre-season game, so weren't sure if we were match-ready.

"But the lads called upon what brought them success last season and it was a solid performance that gives us a good foundation going forward."

McGee added: "If I'm being tough on the lads, I felt we should have got another try for the bonus point, but we managed the game well and didn't panic.

"We heeded what we'd done in training, kept adding points so Hullensians stayed at arm's length, and nearly kept them to zero.

"It was a good performance at this level, as we had to be on it all the time and we were."

Prop Sam Booker is back for Wetherby after missing the Hullensians game due to a prior engagement.

Seeley could also return from his broken hand, while centre Sean Kelly is set for another couple of weeks out with an ankle injury.
