STEETON kept their play-off aspirations alive with a sensational second half comeback to defeat Garstang.

Trailing by two goals heading into the final 20 minutes of the game, three goals in quick succession saw Roy Mason’s side take the lead, before a last-gasp penalty save from James Catlow made sure the three points stayed at Marley.

And regardless of the whether the club make the top five or not, the win ensured a record points total in a season as a semi-professional club for the Chevrons.

As it stands, Steeton are six points off the play-off spots with four games to go.

In a nervy opening 30 minutes, both sides created opportunities to take the lead, but neither could make them count.

The closest either side came was through Andy Briggs for the hosts, his header from close range being denied by a good stop from Will Kitchen in the visitors goal.

Eventually, Garstang took the lead through a moment of individual genius.

Cutting inside off the left wing, John-Jo Morris looked up and struck the ball sweetly from 25 yards.

Once leaving his foot, the ball curved past the outstretched hand of Catlow and into the top corner.

And with the momentum now in their favour, it only took Garstang another six minutes to double their advantage.

A rare poor pass from Mo Farhan Subhani was intercepted by Sam Braithwaite, the central midfielder racing through unchallenged on goal to slot the ball into the back of the net.

Alistair Morgan managed to finish at the far post for the home side shortly before the break, but the referee disallowed the goal for a foul in the build-up from Charlie Lloyd.

Coming out for the second half with the encouragement of Mason in their minds, Steeton turned the game completely on its head with a scintillating second-half showing.

Creating a number of chances, Steeton at first struggled to find a way past the opposition keeper, as Kitchen made a number of good saves.

The route back into the game came for the Chevrons with 20 minutes left to play.

Raeece Ellington bypassed the Garstang centre-halves with a superb through ball from the halfway line into the path of Arale Mohamed.

Mohamed beat the offside trap and slipped the ball beneath the onrushing Kitchen into the bottom corner to restore hope within his side.

And just five minutes after the Chevrons had halved the deficit, the equaliser was presented to them on a plate.

Tyler Beck misjudged a ball into the area from Jake Townsend and went through the back of Briggs, leaving the referee no choice but to point towards the spot.

Briggs picked himself up and sent Kitchen the wrong way from the spot to level up the scores.

Now on the front foot, Steeton took the lead through a screamer of their own.

Ellington fed the ball from the edge of the area into the path of Toby Jeffrey, who fired a strike across goal from 20 yards and inside the far post to spark wild celebrations from the hosts.

Those celebrations appeared premature when the visitors were awarded a penalty in the final minute of normal time for handball, the resulting protests from Townsend seeing the winger put in the sin-bin for dissent.

But Catlow proved the hero of the hour, maintaining his sensational penalty saving record to tip Joe Noblet’s strike away down to his left and in turn, winning the game for his side.

Steeton host fellow play-off chasers Holker Old Boys on Saturday, with both knowing a defeat is likely to spell the end of their promotion dreams.
