THE Keighley Cougars women’s rugby league team are busy preparing for their first game of the season this weekend.

Darren Collins, head coach of the Keighley Cougars women’s team, speaking on the Cougarmania X account after holding the first training session for women and girls players earlier this month, said: “We started off with the pathways. We had some good numbers. As the numbers increase, the skill levels will also increase.

“The girls are really enjoying it,” said the head coach, who explained the team’s plans over the next few weeks.

“We be having our first fixture this Sunday against Batley away.

“It’s a friendly league that we’re joining.

“The girls are really up for it, really excited for it.

“If we can get people across to support us, the more the merrier. Let’s get some more people down.

“The Cougars are a great club, a great family club and this is what we’re trying to get going.”

Collins said the club is recruiting more players and has invited more girls to come along to training.

“If we get more players that would be great,” he said. We just want the girls to enjoy it.

“Come down and enjoy it because that’s what it’s all about.”

Training is on a Tuesday at Silsden Rugby League Club and on Thursday at Cougar Park.

Collins said: “If you’re interested and want to play the game, come down and enjoy it with the girls.”
