Oakworth cyclo-cross rider Joe Moses has received a triple boost.

The teenager won the final round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series last Sunday in Shrewsbury and the triumph ensured he claimed the overall junior men’s title.

He has also been chosen in the Great Britain team for the World Champion-ships later this month.

The victory at Sundorne Sports Village made it three top-of-the-podium places for the 17-year-old in the six rounds.

The Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic RC competitor was one of five riders who tussled for much of the race and he only won by around 15 seconds from Cycleshack rival Alex Welburn, from Burton-on-Trent, who pipped him to the silver medal at the previous week’s National Championships.

Moses led the front group after three laps, with Tom Armstrong and Welburn just off the pace. With two laps to go, Welburn hit the front but he never dropped Moses and Armstrong was only around ten seconds off the pace in third.

The Keighley youngster pulled his rival back on the tarmac sections, meaning that he got a small gap on the final lap and held on for the win.

Afterwards, Moses said: “I came here to win and to get the series overall.

“Alex was a lot better than me on the technical sections but I found I could get a decent gap on him on the flatter, faster sections.

“On the penultimate lap, I managed to get a gap on him and he couldn’t get back.”

Bradley’s Ed McParland (GT Racing UK) was sixth at 1min 33sec.

The National Series may have finished but Moses will still be busy.

He said: “I’m travelling out to Holland this weekend for the World Cup and then I’ve got the World Champs.”

Moses is one of three riders selected for the latter event in Koksijde, Belgium, on aturday, January 28, the others being Welburn and national champion Hugo Robinson.

Chris Young’s hopes of winning the veterans’ race in Shrewsbury ended when he fell on an off-camber section of the course.

Team Jewson’s Darren Atkins took the victory, holding off series winner Jim Bryan (Zepnat RT) by around 30 seconds.

With two laps to go, Atkins had 20 seconds over Bryan and Noel Clough (Wheelbase), while team-mate Young was another ten seconds off the pace, and they held these positions to the end.

The result meant that Derbyshire’s Bryan took the series by 20 points from Atkins, while Clough held on to third spot by holding off Young in fourth.

Oxenhope’s Matt Denby was eighth at 1min 44sec and Chris’ brother Mike was 20th at 3min 49sec.

Bingley’s Robert Watson was 23rd in the senior race and fifth under-23 man, finishing fourth in the overall under-23 standings.
